The note from Gibson regarding this letter between her and Jefferson reads: I had a wager with a friend that Mr. Jefferson got more enjoyment out of playing the part of Bob Acres than out of playing that of Rip van Winkle. I wrote and told him of our wager and this was his reply, so I won! - Mary B. Gibson.
